Dermatology

Whitstable Medical Practice offers a Community Dermatology Service which is accessible to any patient registered within East Kent and will treat all non-urgent Dermatological presentations for patients of all ages.

Appointments are offered from Whitstable (Estuary View Medical Centre), Canterbury (Northgate Medical Practice), Ramsgate (East Cliff Medical Practice) and Folkestone (Folkestone Eye and Skin Centre).

Dermatology in action

Upon receipt of a referral from your GP, we will contact you directly to book you in with a specialist within our team. The team consists of Consultant Dermatologists, specialist GPs who have undertaken further training in Dermatology and specialist nurses. All referrals are triaged and you will see the clinician most appropriate to your individual case.

Appointments last 15 minutes and during this time a full history and examination of your skin complaint will take place.

You may wish to do some reading about your skin complaint before your appointment. The website of The British Association of Dermatologists has a wealth of reliable information

Whilst you are under the care of the Dermatology Clinic please ensure that you inform us of any change to your address or telephone number.

Following Your Appointment

A dedicated Patient Coordinator Team will ensure that we have your registration details correct and book any follow-up appointments before you leave the clinic.

Following your appointment in the Dermatology Clinic, the clinician you saw will report the outcome of your consultation to your GP.

The Clinician will give you instructions about any medication you are prescribed, but these details will also be communicated to your GP. If you require a repeat of your medication this will need to be issued by your own GP.
The dermatology service will only issue 28 days’ worth of medication.

Skin Surgery

Where a surgical procedure is required we will endeavour to offer the operation in a location as close to your home as possible. This may happen on the day or at a future appointment depending on the nature of the skin lesion or complaint. Some lesions may require the input of more specialist surgical teams, in these cases an onward referral will be made by the dermatology clinician seeing you.

Discharge

Once clinically appropriate you may be discharged back to the care of your GP. However, if the condition for which you have been treated re-occurs within six months, or you have queries concerning your condition, please contact our Clinical Services Patient Coordinator on 01227 284314 or 01227 284315 (Monday-Friday 8am-5pm).

If a different skin problem occurs, or it is six months after your last appointment, please arrange a review with your GP who can refer you.
